First lady Michelle Obama gave a forceful, impassioned defense of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, casting her as the only candidate who can be trusted as a role model for the nation's children. Obama was among the power lineup of speakers taking the stage in Philadelphia at the Democratic National Convention. The convention’s first day was embroiled in controversy over leaked emails that showed how party leaders sought to ease Clinton's path to the nomination by mocking her challenger, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

Simon sings "Bridge Over Troubled Water." A song to help with the unity theme of the night.

And Al Franken and Sarah Silverman introduce singer Paul Simon.

"Bernie!" chants now drown out other cheers. Silverman tells the Bernie crowd: "You're being ridiculous." It's competing cheers and "Bernie!" chants on the convention floor.

Silverman gets huge cheer when she says, "Hillary is our presidential nominee and I will proudly vote for her. ... As I continue to be inspired and moved to action by the ideals set forth by Bernie."

Crowd, many waving "Stronger Together" signs, is cheering.
