First lady Michelle Obama gave a forceful, impassioned defense of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, casting her as the only candidate who can be trusted as a role model for the nation's children. Obama was among the power lineup of speakers taking the stage in Philadelphia at the Democratic National Convention. The convention’s first day was embroiled in controversy over leaked emails that showed how party leaders sought to ease Clinton's path to the nomination by mocking her challenger, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

Karla and her mother end the speech with arms raised, saying "Hillary Clinton for president."

The convention shows another video, showing Donald Trump making commetns about Mexican immigrants ad discussing his ban against Muslims.

Eleven-year-old Karla Ortiz (with her mother, Francisca Ortiz), who was born in the U.S., is telling the story of how she fears the deportation of her parents, who are undocumented immigrants. Francisca Ortiz also addresses the delegates, in Spanish.

Many in the crowd in the arena are openly weeping.
