7 p.m. – Hundreds of demonstrators rally in Belo Garden Park, near Main Street, calling for reforms after fatal police shootings days earlier of a black man in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and another in suburban St. Paul, Minnesota.
7:16 p.m. – Protests begin, with hundreds marching, some chanting "enough is enough," as shown in Dallas Police Department video.
9 p.m. – Multiple media outlets report shots fired.
9:05 p.m. – Gunshots sound, captured on video, and officers yell "active shooter" near downtown intersection. People panic and run.
9:40 p.m. –Two officers are reported down.
10:23 p.m. – Dallas Area Transit (DART) police report that four officers have been shot – for a total of six – with one killed. The dead officer later is identified as Brent Thompson, 43.
10:29 p.m. – Dallas Police Chief David O. Brown reports 10 officers have been shot, with three dead. Minutes earlier, his department reports on social media that “it appears that two snipers” took aim “from elevated positions.”
10:44 p.m. – Police and federal officers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives widen the area searched for suspects.
10:52 a.m. – Seeking the public’s help, Dallas PD releases a photo of a man it erroneously identifies as a suspect. Mark Hughes later turns himself in to police, is cleared and released.
10:53 p.m. – Authorities report a total of 11 officers have been shot.
11:13 p.m. – Dallas PD announces the death of a fourth officer.
11:27 p.m. – Dallas PD say “they’ve taken a female suspect into custody after a shootout at the El Centro College,” WFAA-TV reports, with a “second suspect still at scene.”
11:47 p.m. – Police departments nationwide report pairing up officers for safety, WFAA reports.
12:34 a.m. – Dallas police continue negotiations with suspect at parking garage.
1:47 a.m. – A fifth officer is reported dead.
3:06 a.m. – Suspect who’d faced off with police at El Centro College garage is confirmed dead.
6 a.m. hour – Authorities raise count to 12 officers and two civilians shot, with five officers dead. Four were Dallas police officers; a fifth was a Dallas transit officer.
7 a.m. hour – Dallas police chief says the suspect was killed in an explosion.
