Pakistani officials say militants from neighboring Afghanistan attacked a security post in the country's northwest, sparking a deadly clash.

The attack took place late Sunday in the Karakar area of Pakistan's Upper Dir tribal region.

Pakistani officials say the militants fired on Pakistani security forces, triggering a clash that killed at least 15 militants and one Pakistani soldier.

Pakistani leaders have protested deadly attacks on the country's tribal region by militants who cross into Pakistan from Afghanistan.

The porous border region between the two countries is a known safe haven for al-Qaida and Taliban-linked militants.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been high since Afghan intelligence officials accused Pakistan's military spy agency of involvement in the September 20 killing of Afghan peace envoy and former President Burhanuddin Rabbani.
