President Donald Trump announced that the gunman suspected of shooting Republican Congressman Steve Scalise and several others Wednesday outside Washington has died from injuries sustained in a shootout with law enforcement officers.
The president spoke to reporters at the White House just hours after Scalise was shot in Alexandria, Virginia, just south of Washington, while Scalise and other Republican congressional lawmakers and aides were practicing for an annual charity baseball game. The 51-year-old legislator is in critical condition at a Washington hospital after being shot in the hip.
Here's a look at the other shooting victims and their medical status:
Matt Mika is a lobbyist for Tyson Foods and director of government relations in the company’s Washington office. Formerly a legislative assistant for now-retired Rep. Dave Camp, Mika reportedly suffered four or five gunshot wounds during Wednesday morning’s attack. He currently is in critical condition, and being treated at George Washington University Hospital.
Zach Barth is a legislative correspondent for U.S. Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas. He is a recent graduate of the University of Texas – Austin, where he majored in government and interned for a number of Republican lawmakers, including then-Gov. Rick Perry. He went on to work for Gov. Jeb Bush’s ill-fated presidential campaign before working for Rep. Williams. He is expected to make a full recovery. “I am in the hospital and okay,” Barth tweeted after the shooting. “Thank you for the thoughts and prayers.”
Special Agent David Bailey has been a U.S. Capitol Police officer for more than nine years. Formerly with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bailey was praised by House Speaker Paul Ryan for his heroic efforts. Ryan noted that he spoke to both Bailey and another wounded officer, Special Agent Crystal Griner. “I expressed our profound gratitude to them,” Ryan said. Bailey graduated from North Carolina Central University in 2007. Ryan told the House that one of the officers was currently being treated while the other was heading into surgery.
Special Agent Crystal Griner was wounded while returning fire on the assailant. She was shot in the leg or foot and is recovering at a local hospital. She is in good condition, according to The Hill newspaper. “We are ever awed by the tremendous bravery of the Capitol police,” said House Speaker Ryan following the shooting.
