Colombian forces have killed 12 leftist rebels in an attack on fighters assigned to protect Alfonso Cano, leader of Colombia's main rebel group, the FARC.
Colombia's air force, army and police carried out the attack early Sunday in the central province of Tolima.
The military said the rebels killed included eight men and four women.
One of the women killed was Magaly Grannobles, the head of a unit responsible for Cano's security. Also known as Marleny Rondon, she is accused by authorities of carrying out attacks that have killed about 70 Colombian soldiers and police officers.
Also Sunday, Colombia's military said 10 of its soldiers were killed in a battle with the FARC in the northeastern province of Arauca near the Venezuelan border.
The battle came a day after at least two soldiers, at least two police officers and two civilians died in other incidents.
Colombian forces are trying to capture or kill Cano. His group, the FARC, has been at war with Colombia's government for more than 45 years.
Colombia, the United States and the European Union have designated the FARC a terrorist group.
