City College in San Francisco Will Be Tuition Free, It Says

The City College of San Francisco announced that it will be the first college in the nation to provide free tuition.

Anyone who has resided in San Francisco for at least one year will be eligible for free tuition, reported the San Francisco Gate. “The initiative, made possible through a tax on properties [in San Francisco] sold for at least $5 million, is expected to begin next fall,” reported USA Today.

City College of San Francisco was founded in 1935 and is one of the largest community colleges in the United States with about 80,000 students. It is a public, two-year community college where students can achieve an associate's degree.

Until free tuition is rolled out, California residents who are students pay $46 per credit; nonresident tuition fee is an additional $187 per credit. Financial aid is available.

It was accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in January for the next seven years. It has experienced budget, accountability and accreditation issues in the past decade, with the January accreditation being crucial to its future. Without accreditation, the school would have been unable to operate, reported Inside Higher Education.

In December, it was ruled that CCSF must repay the state $39 million for not properly documenting that it taught thousands of students in online courses.

Meanwhile, the state has given the school millions of dollars in "stabilization" funding, according to SF Gate. "The college got $44 million last year and $25 million this year, and will get nothing next year," SF Gate reported.

The City College of San Francisco’s Office of International Programs says there are about 1,200 international students studying at their campuses around the city.

“This deal should make City College much more attractive to students and potential students,” said Rafael Mandelman, a member of the college Board of Trustees. With an increase in enrollment, there will be an increase in state funding and the school will be able to offer more, as expressed by City College Officials.

One of CCSF's notable alums is football player and TV commentator O.J. Simpson.
