Australian police have seized about $900 million worth of a highly addictive street drug — one of the biggest illicit drug busts in Australian history.
Over 720 liters of liquid methamphetamine were discovered in December in shipping containers in several storage units in Sydney. The drug, better known in Australia as ice, was hidden inside art supplies and gelatin bra inserts shipped from mainland China. Justice Minister Michael Keenan told reporters Monday the seizure results to "3.6 million individual hits of ice being taking off our streets."
Four Chinese nationals — three of them from Hong Kong — have been arrested in the case. Keenan told reporters Monday all four face life imprisonment.
The seizure was the result of a joint task force created last November between Australia and China to combat the trafficking of methamphetamine from the communist country to Australia, which has become one of the world's most lucrative markets for the drug.
