Catalan Independence Leaders Flee to Belgium as Spain Seeks Rebellion Charges

Spain’s chief prosecutor is seeking charges of rebellion and sedition against the political leaders of Catalonia, after they declared independence last week. The charges carry jail terms of up to 30 years. Media reports Monday said the region’s former president Carles Puigdemont – who was fired by Madrid along with the rest of the Catalan government – has traveled to Belgium with other ministers, where they may seek asylum.
