To the surprise of absolutely no one, Hamilton, the hip-hop Broadway musical about American founding father Alexander Hamilton, won the prize at Sunday's Tony Awards for best musical, beating out Shuffle Along, Bright Star, Waitress and School of Rock.
Hamilton was the big winner of the night with 11 Tonys, just one short of matching The Producers record 12 Tonys for one show.
Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also plays the title role, took home the Tonys for best musical book and best original score.
However, Miranda lost the best leading actor in a musical prize to fellow cast member Leslie Odom, Jr. who plays Aaron Burr, the U.S. vice president who killed Hamilton in a duel.
The 70th annual Tony Awards was hosted by actor and late-night, talk-show host James Corden who opened the show on a somber note in recognition of the mass killing in Orlando early Sunday that left at least 50 people dead.
"Our hearts go out to all of those affected by this atrocity," Corden said. "Hate will never win. Together we have to make sure of that. Tonight's show stands as a symbol and a celebration of that principle."
The Humans, a play about a fractious family's get-together won the best play crown. Jayne Houdyshell, a mainstay of the New York stage for 40 years, won her first Tony for playing a gossipy mom in The Humans.
Other veteran actors also won prizes: Jessica Lange for best leading actress in a play for Long Day's Journey into Night, and Frank Langella for his leading role in The Father.
Hamilton and the 38 new productions this season helped Broadway's attendance figures hit a record high -- 13.3 million ticket buyers.
The season was also rich in diversity among actors -- 14 of the 40 Tony nominees for acting in plays and musicals were actors of color.
Corden quipped "Think of tonight as the Oscars, but with diversity." The Oscars, Hollywood's annual recognition of film accomplishments, was slammed earlier this year for the lack of diversity in its nominations.
The Color Purple won the Tony for best revival of a musical, while A View from the Bridge won best revival of a play.
The best leading actress in a musical went to Cynthia Erivo for The Color Purple.
Hamilton also won best featured actor in a musical, best featured actress in a musical, best musical costume design, best lighting design, best musical director, best choreography, and best orchestrations.
