A British nurse, treated for Ebola in January, is critically ill following a resurgence of the virus.
"We are sad to announce that Pauline Cafferkey's condition has deteriorated and she is now critically ill," announced the Royal Free Hospital in London where she is being treated.
Cafferkey was transferred from a hospital in Glasgow, Scotland early Wednesday "due to an unusual late complication of her previous infection by the Ebola virus."
She was diagnosed with the virus in December after returning from Sierra Leone, where she worked for the charity Save the Children at an Ebola treatment center.
Cafferkey spent nearly a month in an isolation unit at the London hospital where she was treated with an experimental anti-viral drug before her release in January, after making what doctors said was a full recovery.
A British virologist says she may be the second case in which the Ebola virus has reactivated.
Health officials are monitoring 58 people who have had close contact with Cafferkey, including friends, family, and healthcare workers.
Officials say 25 of the 40 people who had direct contact with her are receiving the vaccine while 15 others have either declined or were unable to receive it due to medical conditions.
