The body of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev has been buried in a Muslim cemetery far from the finish line of the race where he and his brother allegedly set off twin explosions last month that killed three people and wounded more than 250 others.
Boston news media reported Friday that the remains of the 26-year-old Tsarnaev have been buried in a graveyard in the small town of Doswell, Virginia, more than 850 kilometers south of Boston.
Tsarnaev's uncle, Ruslan Tsarni, retrieved his nephew's body from a funeral home in Worcester, Massachusetts outside Boston early Thursday and conducted the burial later in the day.
The burial in the mid-Atlantic state of Virginia ended a lengthy search for a gravesite for Tsarnaev, who died in an April 19 shootout with police. That was four days after the bombings rocked the annual race. His 19-year-old brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured the next day and now faces a charge of conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction.
With many people angered by the bombings, officials in Boston and nearby Cambridge, where the older Tsarnaev lived, said they did not want him buried there.
For days, a Worcester funeral home director has said that he had been unable to find anyone willing to provide a burial site. Eventually, a Virginia woman helped plan the burial at the Muslim cemetery.
