A mid-night attack on Kot-Aluel, a village in Bor county of Jonglei state, has left at least 6 people dead, one child abducted and six others wounded according to officials and victims of the raid.
Area representative at Jonglei state legislative assembly Kuol Bol Ayom described the incident as an unfortunate one to happen so near to the referendum.
“Murle bandits stormed a village. The bandits killed three people and wounded 6 others. During their withdrawal, the criminals managed to match away with five year old boy. Three bandits were killed by the time I visited the scene. It is too lamenting seeing innocent people
dying while they are jubilating, and celebrating successful referendum end,” he explained.
Houses and granaries were also burnt by the attackers who looted over 100 goats. Families are displaced. The people wounded are now nursing injuries at Bor civil hospital. Ayom called on Jonglei state government to make civil security a priority.
“The armed group made a lot of destructions as follow; 57 houses, 21 granaries and 273 goats were burnt down.About 117 household displaced. I appeal to the government of Jonglei state and Government of Southern Sudan as well not only to protect innocent people from Murle bandits
but also to mobilize NGOS and other humanitarians organization to provide basic needs to the victims,” he said.
Since the 2005 peace deal, thousands have been killed in Jonglei state from fighting between local communities.
The Murle, alleged to carry out this attack, are known to abduct children from neighboring tribes.
After independence, the real challenge for the Jonglei state government will be how to end these inter-tribal conflicts.
