Giphy Embed ImageConsidered an unofficial holiday in America, Super Bowl Sunday is a sporting event unlike anything else in the world.

Tickets to this sporting spectacle are hard to come by and cost an arm and a leg, so attending the game is often just as elusive as playing in it.

So Americans have made the event a day of super partying: Friends come together -- typically wearing a jersey or shirt of the team they support, eat food that often involves cheese and chicken wings and pizza, and they drink (usually beer). While it used to be a sporting event marketed to men, promoters and advertisers got smart to expanding the theme from men hurling themselves at each other, to men hurling themselves at each other with lots of breaks for creative advertisements and halftime heavyweight entertainment.

This year, the New England Patriots take on the Atlanta Falcons. The Patriots have been contenders on Super Bowl Sunday nine times and have taken the title as champions on four. The Atlanta Falcons are playing in their second Super Bowl.

The great thing about the Super Bowl, it’s more than just the game. The performances and ads are some of the best of the year. And with the average price of a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl costing $5 million, according to The New York Times, you are sure to be entertained.

The great thing about Super Bowl Sunday is that there is a little something for everybody. This year’s half-time show performer is pop sensation Lady Gaga. The outspoken and often controversial singer has attended an awards ceremony in a meat dress, drenched herself in fake blood on stage, and even performed in the guise of a man. Look for her to turn heads during her performance Sunday.

Here are a few must-do’s to have a truly American experience.

  1. Don’t watch the game alone! Get a group of friends or family who love the game and love the social aspect of the event. Being around the energy of diehard fans really amplifies the vibe and puts you in a good mood no matter the outcome.

  1. There is no such thing as too much food. Super Bowl Sunday is a bit like Thanksgiving in which you can eat anything you want and not be judged. Anything. For many, the traditional Super Bowl menu consists of a large variety of finger foods. While most are fried, anything small and easy to make is usually a safe option. Wings, chips and dip, sliders, and fried pickles are always favorites, but the choices are endless.

  1. You can skip the game, but you can’t skip the entertainment. This is what everyone truly remembers about game day in the years to come. From Michael Jackson’s incredible performance in 1993, to his sister Janet’s infamous wardrobe malfunction of 2004, the halftime show is the headliner. The ads are spectacular, too, with companies and products competing for attention in high-priced, 30- and 60-second slots. The Budweiser beer ads that have featured such heart warming stories as the friendship between the company's trademark Clydesdale horses and a puppy, have stepped aside for an immigration tale this year.

  1. It doesn’t matter if you know the rules, someone in the group will explain them to you. Learning a second language may be hard, but trying to understand football is just as challenging. With stopping and starting to switch teams, flag throwing, and teams keeping possession even after they run out of bounds, football truly is in a league of its own. If you don’t understand what’s going on, that’s OK, you’re definitely not alone! Many Americans struggle to understand what’s going on in the games sometimes. The important thing is to eat, drink and enjoy this American event.

If you can't hold your own Super Bowl Sunday party, relax, someone will have you covered. Universities often offer a collective viewing of this big event even offering finger foods in their cafeterias or hosting parties with food and drinks.
