China's official Xinhua news agency says a fire in a high-rise apartment building in Shanghai has killed at least 42 people. Earlier, local officials said more than 90 others were injured.
Xinhua said the 20-story building was being renovated when it caught fire Monday afternoon. It said the structure is a residential building for teachers, many of whom are retired.
The article said the cause of the fire is not known, but a witness said he saw the blaze spread from a worker's scaffold to the rest of the building.
