The Israeli military has acknowledged it carried out a strike in Gaza City Wednesday that killed a Palestinian man and wounded another.
Military officials say the strike targeted a militant with the Army of Islam, an extremist group believed to have al-Qaida loyalties. The Israeli military released a statement saying the intended target (identified as Mohammed Jamal al-Nimnim) had directed several attacks against Israel.
The military says the strike was a joint effort between Israeli Defense Forces and the Israel Security Agency.
Earlier Wednesday, Palestinians blamed Israel after the suspect's car exploded near Hamas police headquarters. Israeli media reports said the blast could have been a car bomb that detonated prematurely, but there was no official word from Israel.
The explosion comes during a period of relative calm between the Palestinian-ruled territory and Israel -- and between the rival Hamas and Fatah factions.
