Arizona Man Charged With Supporting Islamic State

An Arizona man has been charged with supporting Islamic State by helping a New York college student get terror training in Syria.

Ahmed Mohammed el Gammal, 42, of Avondale, Arizona was indicted Thursday for providing material support to the terrorist group. Prosecutors say Gammal posted comments on social media supporting Islamic State, which were seen by a 24-year-old college student in New York City.

Court documents say Gammal helped the student travel to Syria for military training. The indictment said the student left New York for Turkey in January.

Court documents did not provide the name or current status of the student. According to the indictment, the student contacted Gammal from Syria on May 7 and said everything was going according to plan.

Gammal faces charges of providing material support to a terrorist organization, conspiracy and other counts.
