The Kenyan army says it has killed 11 members of the Islamist group al-Shabab during an attack on a military camp. It said two soldiers also died in the fighting Sunday.
Kenya's military said the deaths occurred during a dawn attack by the militant Islamist group on a camp at Buare in the coastal region of Lamu, close to Somalia, where al-Shabab is based.
Military spokesman Colonel David Obonyo said two unidentified Caucasian men were among the militants killed in the fighting. He said Kenyan forces are searching for other militants who were believed to have fled into a nearby forest.
Obonyo said the military seized weapons including 13 AK-47 rifles, five rocket propelled grenades and eight grenades.
Al-Shabab, which seeks to overthrow the Western-backed Somali government and impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law, has frequently targeted neighboring Kenya, saying it is retaliating for Kenya's participation in an African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia.
In the group's deadliest attack to date, four gunmen killed 148 people, mostly students, at a university in Garissa in early April.
