A nurse from the United States who was exposed to the Ebola virus while volunteering in Sierra Leone has been admitted to a clinic at the U.S. National Institutes of Health near Washington, D.C.
The NIH says the nurse, who has not tested positive for Ebola, was brought back to the U.S. aboard a private medevac flight and admitted to the clinic Thursday afternoon. The nurse's identity, medical condition, professional affiliation and date of exposure were not disclosed.
The NIH Clinical Center is designed to provide high-level isolation capabilities. The facility is one of 35 institutions designated as Ebola treatment centers earlier this month by the U.S. government.
The special unit previously treated a nurse who contracted Ebola in Texas, Nina Pham. She was infected while caring for a Liberian man, Thomas Eric Duncan, who later died from the virus.
Pham ultimately did recover and is said to be Ebola free.
