LIVE BLOG: Ambush in Dallas

What began as a peaceful demonstration against police violence in Dallas Thursday night turned into a deadly ambush against police, leaving five officers dead and Americans dazed yet again in the face of gun violence and tragedy. Here are the latest updates from this developing story.

Before five police officers were shot and killed during a peaceful protest against police violence in Dallas, two black men were killed by police officers in separate incidents.

The were Philando Castile in St. Paul, Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana:

Recapping Dallas shooting once again:

* Four Dallas police officers and one DART officer were killed.

* Seven officers and two civilians were wounded.

* One suspect, identified as Micah Xavier Johnson, exchanged fire with police and was killed when a police robot detonated an explosive in a parking garage at El Centro College.

* Three people were said to be in custody.

* Primary and secondary sweeps for explosives were completed early Friday. None were found.

The officers who died at the Dallas protest:

Among the police officers killed is Brent Thompson, 43, who was the city's first mass-transit officer killed in the line of duty since DART's formation in 1989. He joined the department in 2009, according to a statement released by the agency.

Thompson was a newly-wed, having married a fellow officer just two weeks ago.

Dallas Police Officer Patrick Zamarripa was also killed in the shooting last night. His father, Rick Zamarripa, posted on Facebook:

"My son is a police officer in Dallas he was working there the rally in downtown where my son was shot and killed by a sniper along with four other police officers ... Need prayers to get through this."
