Activists say a Syrian government airstrike on a crowded vegetable market has killed at least 20 people in a rebel-held area of the northern city of Aleppo.

The attack is part of an aerial assault being waged by the Syrian government against Aleppo and nearby villages.

Activists say the assault has killed more than 400 people since it began nearly two weeks ago.

Aleppo, Syria's largest city, has been a major front in the country's civil war since rebels launched an offensive there in 2012. The city has since been heavily damaged in fighting that has left it divided into rebel- and government-controlled areas.

The United Nations says at least 100,000 people have been killed in the nearly three-year conflict between Syrian rebels and the government.
