World Bank President Says World Can Do More For Darfur, Sudan

update

Paul Wolfowitz, left, meets Rwanda's President Paul Kagame
World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz says the international community can do more to help Sudan's troubled Darfur region recover from what he calls genocide.

Mr. Wolfowitz said in Rwanda Friday, some progress has been made in Darfur, but that he is sure more can be done.

He said part of the healing process after genocide must be development and poverty reduction, and said he is quite certain the World Bank has a role to play in Darfur. However, he cautioned that genocide affects a society for a long time.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed, and over two million displaced, in fighting between Arab militia and non-Arab rebels in Darfur.

Mr. Wolfowitz is on his first visit to Africa since becoming World Bank president.
