Swiss Police Detain Russian Nuclear Scientist at US Request

Police in Switzerland have arrested a former Russian atomic energy minister wanted by U.S. authorities for money laundering and fraud.

Justice Ministry officials in Bern said Wednesday that police, acting on a U.S. request, detained scientist and former minister Yevgeny Adamov in the Swiss capital on Monday.

Swiss authorities have scheduled an extradition hearing for Wednesday in Bern.

Officials did not confirm news reports that Mr. Adamov was in Switzerland on business related to his daughter's finances.

U.S. officials say that while holding a senior scientific research position, Mr. Adamov stole about $9 million in funds the United States provided Moscow in the 1990s to improve security at nuclear facilities.

Mr. Adamov served as Russia's atomic energy minister from 1998 to 2001.
