Pinochet Meets With Former Head of Secret Police

Former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet has met with the man who once headed the now-disbanded secret police, under orders from a judge trying to determine responsibility for the disappearance of 119 Pinochet foes while in custody in 1975.

The judge is investigating which of the two men had direct control over the secret police, known as DINA, at the time of the disappearances and other human rights abuses.

General Pinochet has denied being in direct control of DINA, but General Contreras has said the retired dictator was head of the organization.

Lawyers for General Contreras, who is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence in a related case, sought Friday's meeting after General Pinochet distanced himself from DINA's activities.

General Pinochet ruled Chile from 1973 to 1990.
