The husband of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is scheduled to return to Pakistan from overseas on Saturday, April 16. Asif Ali Zardari left the country last December when he was freed on bail after serving eight years in prison on corruption charges.
Mr. Zardari has since become a prominent figure in the Pakistan People's Party. Party officials allege the recent arrests are meant to discourage Saturday's reception in Lahore for his return.
Local police told the Associated Press that they only arrested those planning to disturb the peace.
