Hundreds of supporters and opponents of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak rallied in Cairo Friday near a meeting of judges gathered to discuss upcoming presidential elections.

Pro-Mubarak demonstrators called for another six-year term for the leader who has been in power since 1981. Members of the opposition Kifaya, or Enough, movement, carried banners and chanted anti-Mubarak slogans.

Nearby, a meeting of Cairo judges got under way to discuss the presidential election. The justices have threatened not to monitor the vote if they are not allowed to supervise the entire process.

September's election will be the first to allow multiple candidates. Although he has not said whether he will run again, in the past, Mr. Mubarak was re-elected in a referendum.
