Pro-Mubarak demonstrators called for another six-year term for the leader who has been in power since 1981. Members of the opposition Kifaya, or Enough, movement, carried banners and chanted anti-Mubarak slogans.
Nearby, a meeting of Cairo judges got under way to discuss the presidential election. The justices have threatened not to monitor the vote if they are not allowed to supervise the entire process.
