Chad President Calls for Senegal to Extradite Ex-Leader

Chad's President Idriss Deby has urged Senegal to extradite former Chadian leader Hissene Habre, who is wanted in Belgium for committing alleged war crimes.

Mr. Deby made the appeal during a visit to the European Union headquarters in Brussels.

A Senegalese court is to rule on Mr. Habre's extradition on Friday.

Belgium issued an international arrest warrant for Mr. Habre, accusing his government of committing mass killings and torture during his eight years in office, which ended in 1990.

Belgium is trying him under its universal jurisdiction laws, which allow for prosecution of suspected war crimes regardless of where they were committed.

Mr. Habre was arrested earlier this month in Senegal, where he has lived in exile for 15 years.
