Pakistani PM-Designate Escapes Assassination Attempt - 2004-07-30

Pakistan's Prime Minister-designate Shaukat Aziz has survived an assassination attempt that killed at least four people and wounded six others.

Officials say Mr. Aziz was ambushed after addressing an election rally in Punjab province. They say he was not hurt in the attack.

Shaukat Aziz, currently Pakistan's finance minister, has been chosen by the ruling party to be the next prime minister. But the ally of President Pervez Musharraf must first win a seat in parliament.

Mr. Aziz has been campaigning for a by-election to be held on August 18.

The French news agency reports Mr. Aziz appeared on local television saying his "determination to serve the Pakistani and Islamic world has been enhanced." He added that he is deeply grieved by the loss of lives in the attack.
