Earthquake Rocks Indonesia

update

A strong earthquake rocked Indonesia Friday, even as recovery efforts continued from last month's devastating quake there.

The earthquake made buildings sway in the capital Jakarta and caused panic in some villages, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Officials said the 6.4 magnitude quake struck in the Sunda Strait, off the western coast of Java island.

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck West Sumatra September 30 - killing at least 1,000 people, collapsing buildings and triggering landslides.

Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes because it sits on an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
