Israelis, Palestinians Clash in Jerusalem Ahead of Yom Kippur

Israelis and Palestinians clashed Sunday at a Jerusalem shrine ahead of a Jewish High Holy Day. Police say nine Israeli police officers and more than a dozen Palestinians were injured.

Israeli police clashed with Palestinians at a disputed holy place in Jerusalem's Old City, which is revered by both Jews and Muslims.

Police used stun grenades to disperse about 150 Palestinians who threw stones at tourists visiting the site known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.

The incident occurred hours before the Jewish High Holy Day of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Israeli police said the violence was a clear attempt to disturb the peace on the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

Police are also on high alert in the mixed northern city of Acre, where clashes between Israeli Jews and Arabs marred the Yom Kippur holiday last year.

Northern police commander Shimon Koren told Israel Radio that violence will not be tolerated.

Koren warned that if anyone tries to disturb the peace, there will be a tough response from police and undercover units. He urged Jews and Arabs to act with tolerance and restraint.
