Death Toll Rises in Pakistan Bombings

Pakistani authorities have discovered more victims of two suicide bombings in the country's northwest, raising the death toll to 24.

Authorities say they pulled more bodies from the rubble in Bannu Sunday, a day after a bomber crashed his explosives-laden truck into the town's police station.

A Taliban commander, Qari Hussain, claimed responsibility for the blast and warned of further attacks.

The second explosion killed at least 10 people in the city of Peshawar on Saturday.

Police say the attacker threw a grenade at a crowd of people outside a bank, before detonating about 100 kilograms of explosives in his vehicle. The force of the blast overturned cars, shattered windows and scattered debris throughout the streets.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the bombings. And the Information minister, Mian Iftikhar Hussain, for North West Frontier Province said the attacks would not deter the government from fighting militants.

The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan issued a statement saying the bombings highlight "the vicious and inhuman nature of this enemy" whose true target is the democratically elected government of Pakistan and the security of all Pakistanis.
