Israeli Police Recommend Olmert Face New Indictments

Israeli police are recommending new indictments against former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for fraud and breach of trust - the latest development in a wave of corruption scandals that forced him from office.

Monday's recommendation stems from allegations that Mr. Olmert improperly appointed acquaintances during his term as the minister of industry and trade between 2003 and 2006.

Prosecutors are investigating a series of corruption claims against Mr. Olmert, all of them predating his days as prime minister. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Earlier Monday, Israeli Attorney General Menachem Mazuz closed a separate investigation into one of Mr. Olmert's real estate dealings, citing a lack of evidence.

Authorities had been investigating allegations that Mr. Olmert got a steep discount on his home in an exclusive Jerusalem neighborhood, in exchange for political favors.

In March, Israeli police dropped their investigation into these dealings, also citing a lack of evidence.

Mr. Olmert bought the home in question while he was mayor of Jerusalem, long before he became prime minister in January of 2006.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
