Labor Group Urges Burma to End Forced Labor

The International Labor Organization is calling on the Burmese government to change legislation and a constitutional provision that allow forced labor.

During a session of the ILO's committee on labor standards in Geneva Saturday, the group said efforts by the military government to end forced labor so far have been "totally inadequate".

The committee called on the Burmese government to amend current legislation to ban forced labor. It also called on the military-ruled junta to change a provision that will allow forced labor when the new constitution goes into effect in 2010.

Human rights groups have long accused the Burmese government of using forced labor, including child labor, for state-run construction projects.
