Officials in Afghanistan say at least 30 people were killed in fighting, air strikes and roadside bomb attacks across the country Wednesday.
NATO says its troops, along with Afghan forces, killed 15 Taliban militants who attacked their base in southeastern Paktia province.
Officials say the troops exchanged fire with the militants for five hours and called in air strikes. No Afghan or NATO troops were killed during the clash.
Elsewhere in Paktia province, Afghan police say a district governor and his three sons were killed by a roadside bomb Wednesday.
In central Afghanistan, Afghan and U.S. forces say they killed four suspected militants and arrested at least five others during operations targeting the network of insurgent leader Jalaluddin Haqqani.
The commander is accused of planning attacks in the area using suicide bombers.
And in eastern Kunar province, NATO says seven Afghan civilians were killed and eight others were wounded when insurgents fired several missiles near a farming area near the border with Pakistan.
NATO says the wounded included children, one of whom was evacuated to the Bagram military base for medical treatment.
In other news, Afghanistan's Interior Ministry announced plans to provide each presidential candidate with 20 policemen as bodyguards for the country's August election.
More than 40 men and women have signed up to run in the election.
