India and Turkey confirmed their first cases of the H1N1 swine flu
Saturday, saying in each case the patients had come from the United
States.
The Indian Health Ministry says it found the virus in an
Indian man who traveled to the country from New York. Officials said
he arrived in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad on Wednesday and
was immediately quarantined.
The ministry says the man changed planes in Dubai and that passengers on both flights were being notified.
Turkish
Health Minister Recep Akdag said Saturday officials identified the
virus in an Iraqi-American man who stopped at the airport in Istanbul
on his way to Iraq. Turkish media say the man's wife has also tested
positive.
About 160 passengers on the man's flight are also being monitored.
The World Health Organization says the H1N1 swine flu has now infected some 8,400 people in 36 countries, killing more than 70.
The WHO says most of the deadly cases have been in Mexico.
In
the U.S., the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
says there are more than 4,710 confirmed and probable cases of the
virus in nearly every state.
