Syrian Suspect in Hariri Killing Reported Arrested in UAE

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have arrested a Syrian suspect in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Reports from the region on Sunday said Emirati police recently detained a former Syrian intelligence officer, identified as Mohammed Zuhair Siddiq, in connection with the 2005 attack. The reports say Syrian authorities have requested his extradition from the Emirate of Sharjah.

Emirati officials have not confirmed the reported arrest.

Many anti-Syrian Lebanese accuse Syria of carrying out the truck bombing that killed Mr. Hariri and 22 others in Beirut in February 2005, a charge Damascus denies.

Lebanon began handing over files from its investigation of the attack to a U.N.-sponsored special tribunal in the Netherlands earlier this month. A Lebanese judge said four pro-Syrian Lebanese generals detained in connection with the assassination will remain in jail until the tribunal in The Hague decides what to do with them.
