At Least 7 Killed in Violence Across Afghanistan

At least seven people have been killed in violence across Afghanistan.

Officials said a woman was killed and five others injured when a bomb on a bicycle exploded in the southern city of Kandahar on Saturday.

Meanwhile, international troops killed at least six militants in separate operations.

A military statement released Saturday said NATO and Afghan forces killed three militants during a raid targeting insurgent commanders in Logar province, south of the capital Kabul.

In Khost province, the coalition said one militant was killed after an unmanned spy plane spotted him and two accomplices placing an improvised explosive device.

And U.S.-led coalition and Afghan troops killed two militants in the western province of Farah, after coming under fire while on patrol.

An unknown number of militants were killed Saturday in Kandahar province when NATO and Afghan forces fired on an underground bunker, during an operation targeting a senior militant in Maywand district.

U.S. officials have said they expect violence to rise in Afghanistan in coming months as the United States increases its troop presence there. President Barack Obama has announced plans to send an additional 21,000 troops and trainers as part of a new strategy to combat the growing Taliban insurgency in the country.
