Small Protests Precede NATO Summit

Police in France and Germany have encountered small, peaceful protests in sharp contrast to the violent clashes in Strasbourg Thursday evening ahead of NATO's 60th anniversary summit.

Several hundred demonstrators protested calmly in the German town of Baden-Baden as U.S. President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel met at the town hall.

French police strengthened their cordon around the city of Strasbourg after detaining 300 people during clashes between protesters and police. Officials say about 100 demonstrators are still in custody.

Police used tear gas on the demonstrators, who smashed windows and set fire to trash bins as security forces sought to block a protest march toward central Strasbourg.

German and French authorities have deployed about 25,000 police to maintain security around the two towns.
