French police have used tear gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators in a suburb of the eastern city of Strasbourg on the eve of NATO's 60th anniversary summit in France and Germany.
The demonstrators smashed windows and set fire to trash bins as police sought to block their march toward central Strasbourg from what protesters called their peace camp outside the city.
Police reported dozens of arrests.
German and French authorities have deployed about 25,000 police to maintain security around Strasbourg and around Kehl and Baden-Baden in Germany, for the summit. U.S. President Barack Obama and 27 other NATO leaders are to arrive in Strasbourg for the two-day meeting on Friday.
Meanwhile, there was a heavy police presence in London after Wednesday's violent demonstrations that left at least one person dead and scores of others under arrest.
Police said the victim collapsed and died from a suspected heart attack. Officials said medics were targeted with bottles as they tried to come to the aid of the fallen protester.
More than 80 people have been arrested in the protests, which are aimed at world leaders attending the G-20 summit.
