Iraqi security officials said unidentified gunmen have killed a Sunni Muslim cleric and wounded his son in a town northeast of Baghdad that was rocked by a suicide bombing earlier this week.
Security officials said the attackers apparently used guns equipped with silencers when they opened fire late Thursday on the imam of a local mosque in Jalawla, an ethnically-mixed town in Diyala province.
On Monday, a suicide bomber targeting Kurdish mourners in Jalawla killed at least 27 people and wounded around 50 more.
The town lies near the border between northern Iraq's largely autonomous Kurdish region and the rest of Iraq, where Arabs are in the majority. Tensions between Arabs and Kurds can run high in the border areas.
