The U.S. Labor Department says 651,000 Americans lost their jobs in February, pushing the unemployment rate half a point higher to 8.1 percent.
The rate is the highest since 1983.
Although the number of people receiving unemployment benefits dropped more than expected last week, economists say the levels remain high and are unlikely to drop any time soon.
