The United Nations labor organization and the military-ruled junta in Burma have extended their agreement on dealing with forced labor complaints for another year.
Burma's state-run newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported Friday that Burma's Labor Minister Aung Kyi signed the extension to Burma's supplementary understanding with the Geneva-based International Labor Organization this week.
Thursday's signing coincided with ILO Executive Director Kari Tapiola's visit to Burma's administrative capital, Naypyitaw.
Aung Kyi praised the extension of the agreement saying it proves the government's commitment to eradicate forced labor.
The agreement Burma first signed in 2007 aims to provide a complaint mechanism for victims of forced labor, based on existing law.
Human rights groups for years have accused Burma of using forced labor for state-run construction projects, including the building of the government complex at Naypyitaw.
