India's Taj Mahal hotel is set to reopen in about a week, less than one month after it was hit by Islamic militants in the Mumbai terrorist attacks.
The Indian Hotels Company, part of the Tata Group conglomerate which owns the Taj, said Saturday the reopening will happen on December 21st.
In a statement, the hotel company's director (Raymond Bickson) said reopening the hotel so quickly shows the company's "resolve to commemorate all the innocent people who lost their lives" during the attacks.
The 105-year-old Taj Mahal hotel was one of about ten sites stormed by gunmen in a 60-hour siege that killed at least 170 people.
Only the newer wing of the hotel, known as the Taj Mahal Tower, will open in December. Officials are assessing the extent of the damage to the old part, and no date has been set for its reopening.
The Taj hotel has housed visiting monarchs, heads of state, millionaire businessmen and rock stars.
Mumbai's luxury Trident hotel is also set to reopen on December 21. But the Trident's older Oberoi wing suffered more extensive damage and could take longer to reopen.
