A trial version of the first ever Muslim-friendly virtual world is now available online.
Called Muxlim Pal, the site allows online computer users to create an avatar, or character, and interact with other users in a safe and friendly, albeit virtual, environment.
Once in the virtual world, characters can go shopping, attend concerts or pray in custom-designed rooms.
The Finland-based Muxlim Pal is similar to other popular virtual-world programs such as The Sims and Second Life. But unlike those programs, Muxlim does not allow sexual, drug-related or other content it deems obscene.
Program creator Mohamed El-Fatatry says the idea came to him after talking to young Muslims who wanted a place to share their interests and lifestyles.
He says the goal is to connect both Muslims and non-Muslims alike through shared online experiences.
