The head of NATO says the Afghan war effort will not be affected by escalating militant attacks on the alliance's supply routes through northwestern Pakistan.
NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said Tuesday, militants should not be under any illusion that they can disrupt lines of communication because NATO has alternatives.
His comments in Brussels came after Taliban militants in Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar attacked three transport depots Sunday and Monday, setting more than 150 military trucks on fire.
Also Tuesday, Afghan Interior Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmarurged the European Union to accelerate its police training ahead of Afghan national elections set for next year.
Atmar, who is in Brussels for talks with European Union and NATO officials, said he came to the Belgian capital to support adding resources for the EUPOL police mission in Afghanistan.
In May, the EU agreed to double the size of its police mission to 400 trainers. Currently, it has around 170 international and 91 local staff.
