Health officials in Mozambique say at least 50 people have died from an outbreak of cholera in the central province of Manica.
The government has declared a high alert for the area in an effort to control the outbreak.
Evelina Malora, a health official working in the region, says the outbreak occurred after people drank from a contaminated lake or lagoon near the village of Guru.
Malora says the area has been isolated to prevent the disease from spreading further.
Cholera is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by a viral infection of the intestine. It is often spread through contaminated food or water and can lead to death through dehydration and shock within hours if not treated.
