U.S. stock market indexes posted mixed results in Wednesday's volatile trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.8 percent (74 points) to end at 8.991. The S&P 500 fell more than one percent (10 points) to finish at 930 but the NASDAQ was up 0.5 percent (eight points) to reach 1,657.
European stock markets were mixed at the close of trading. London's Financial Times 100 index soared eight percent (316 points) to end at 4,243. The CAC 40 in Paris jumped more than nine percent (288 points) to end at 3,403, but the DAX in Frankfurt declined 0.3 percent (15 points) to hit 4,809.
In Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index advanced a very strong 7.7 percent (590 points) to finish at 8.212. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng advanced 0.8 percent (106 points) to end at 12,702.
The price of gold rose more than $4 to trade at $751.22 an ounce.
The dollar was down against the yen and the euro.
