Police in southern Afghanistan say a roadside bomb has killed an Afghan district chief and police chief.
Kandahar province's police chief Matiullah Khan, Tuesday said the Registan district officials were traveling together in the province when they were struck by the bomb Monday. Four of their guards were wounded.
Separately, the International Committee of the Red Cross says five detainees at a U.S. military prison met with their relatives Tuesday, in the first face-to-face visits at the Bagram base near Kabul.
The Red Cross and U.S. military officials say families were given hour-long meetings with prisoners, and such visits were expected to be repeated regularly.
In January, the Red Cross began helping families speak with detainees at Bagram through a video-conference system.
In another development, the U.N. Security Council agreed Monday to extend the mandate of NATO-led forces in Afghanistan by one year.
