U.S. stock market indexes Tuesday recovered some of the heavy losses suffered on Monday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.3 percent (139 points) to finish the day at 11,056. The S&P 500 jumped 1.8 percent (21 points) to reach1,214, while the NASDAQ rose one percent (22 points) to end at 2,202.
European stock markets closed lower. London's Financial Times 100 index hit a three-year low before closing 3.4 percent (179 points) lower at 5,026. The CAC 40 in Paris fell two percent (82 points) to finish at 4,087, and the DAX in Frankfurt fell 1.6 percent (99 points) to finish at 5,965.
In Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei index plunged five percent (605 points) to end the day at 11,610. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index also fell five percent (1,052 points), to close at 18,301.
The price of gold fell almost $9 to trade at $777.95 an ounce.
The U.S. dollar is up against the yen and the euro.
