Johnson edges Liukin in gymnastics balance beam event
Shawn Johnson of the United States won the final event in the women's gymnastics competition, taking gold in the balance beam. She edged fellow-American Nastia Liukin, who earned the silver.
Chinese gymnast Li Xiaopeng won his second gold medal in Beijing by taking the top spot in the men's parallel bars. Zou Kai narrowly edged American Jonathan Horton to win the high bar competition, while his China teammate Lu Chunlong took gold in the men's trampoline.
Harper wins 100m hurdles final
On the track, Dawn Harper of the United States won gold in the women's 100-meter hurdles, with a personal best time of 12.54 seconds. Her favored teammate Lolo Jones was leading when she clipped the penultimate hurdle and staggered to a seventh-place finish.
Reigning world champion Christine Ohuruogu of Britain captured the women's 400-meter gold medal with a time of 49.62 seconds. Shericka Williams of Jamaica took silver, while the bronze went to American Sanya Richards.
Ramzi wins men's 1500m final
Moroccan-born Rashid Ramzi won the men's 1500-meters to give Bahrain its first-ever Olympic track and field gold medal. His winning time was three minutes and 32.94 seconds.
World champion Gerd Kanter of Estonia won the men's discus gold medal with a throw of 68.82 meters, while Andrey Silnov of Russia captured the men's high jump gold with a winning leap of 2.36 meters.
He Chong earns perfect score in men's 3m springboard event
China has taken its sixth gold medal in six diving events, as He Chong earned 11 perfect marks (of 10.0) to win the men's three-meter springboard event.
German weightlifter Matthias Steiner won the gold medal in the men's over 105-kilogram division with a total lift of 461 kilos.
US wins gold in sailing event
The United States won two golds when Anna Tunnicliffe won the women's Laser Radial sailing event and Henry Cejudo took the men's 55 kilogram freestyle wrestling title. Mavlet Batirov of Russia took the men's freestyle wrestling gold in the 60-kilo division.
Defending equestrian champion Anky van Grunsven of the Netherlands has won the gold medal in the individual dressage event.
Germany wins men's triathlon gold
In the first medal event of the day, Germany's Jan Frodeno won the gold in the men's triathlon. In the men's sailing regatta, Paul Goodison gave Britain its third gold medal by winning the Laser class.
Juan Esteban Curuchet and Walter Fernando Perez of Argentina captured the gold medal in the men's madison. It was their nation's first track cycling medal of the Beijing Olympics. Three-time world champion Victoria Pendleton of Britain won the gold medal in the women's track cycling sprint, while another Brit, Chris Hoy, won the men's track cycling sprint gold.
Nigeria advances to football gold medal round
In the men's football tournament, Nigeria defeated Belgium 4-1 to earn a spot in the gold medal match. They will face Argentina in the final after the defending champions shut out perennial rival Brazil, 3-0.
US women trounce South Korea in basketball quarterfinals
The United States got 26 points and 14 rebounds from Sylvia Fowles on the way to a 104-60 rout of South Korea and a berth the semifinals in the women's basketball tournament. Earlier, Australia drubbed the Czech Republic, 79-46. Australia will face China in the final four, while the U.S. plays the winner of the quarterfinal between Russia and Spain.
The United States has the most total medals with 79, including 26 gold. But China leads the gold count with 43 and a total of 76 medals.
